Portishead horses may get a safe crossing

HORSES could soon be helped to cross one of Portishead's most busy roads more safely.

Plans are being put forward to install a special Pegasus crossing to link the two halves of Gypsy Lane bridleway on the A369 Portbury Hundred.

The special crossing is designed to allow horse riders to activate the lights without having to dismount.

The route is used by hundreds of walkers, cyclists and riders each year. The scheme was discussed at a meeting of North Somerset Council north area planning committee and a final decision on whether work can start will be made in May.

Portishead councillor John H Clark said: "Safety is what is important here.

"At the moment speeding cars can make it difficult for riders to cross the A369, although they are keeping to the bridleway, which was there before the road was built. These crossings provide a secure waiting area until the lights change and horses will not be kept prancing by the roadside.

"With the existing and now extended bridleway routes around the new coastal wetlands area, we must make it possible for horse riders to get safely across the A369.
